DJ Fresh wasted no time in responding to his dismissal from Metro FM on Tuesday afternoon and the broadcast veteran has issued a statement of his own on social media. Let’s just say he’s not taking the news too badly!
The writing was on the wall for a long time, really. DJ Fresh’s suspension from Metro FM, while warranted, was unnecessarily harsh and we knew that things were not looking good when DJ Fresh himself hinted that he had no idea when he would return on air.
Days turned into weeks and still the Big Dawg’s husky voice was notably missing from a show literally named after him, The #FreshBreakfast. The hashtag #BringBackDJFresh tried to campaign for his return but all of those tweets (and wasted data) were in vain because on Tuesday afternoon, the SABC announced that they had decided to terminate Thato Shikwane’s statement with the broadcaster claiming.
“Mr Sikwane was afforded an opportunity to remedy his contractual breaches, which he failed and/or refused to do. This conduct resulted in the irretrievable breakdown of the trust relations between the SABC and himself”.
DJ Fresh, upon seeing the news break, took to social media to issue a statement of his own when he said:
“I have no regrets about how this worked out, because I firmly believe that fair labour practice is about correction ore than it is about being grossly punitive. As a principle, I would sooner walk away from a job (ANY JOB) than accept such abuse.”
DJ Fresh also apologized to all the listeners he had offended before announcing (wait for it…) that he was dropping a brand new show on the 1st of August 2019!
Judging from the responses offered by fans on social media it looks like DJ Fresh’s loyal legion of listeners will be following him and his infectious laugh wherever he goes next. Those who have been watching on social media will be well aware of the fact that he won’t be short on offers after auditioning for Newzroom Afrika’s Breaking Dawn on Tuesday Morning.
Fans, meanwhile, have a mouthful (or an earful!) for the SABC. The national broadcaster is currently trending at number one on social media:
After dismissing one of the biggest talents in South African radio, where do you think Metro FM will go from here?
